Suggestions for a 125 Gal Amazon River Biotope!

I've seen two angels gang up on neons 2" long and tear it apart, piece by piece... (Remember the t-rexes ganging up on that guy in the lost world Jurassic Park? same deal, except real.)
Needless to say, that particular tank didn't have anymore neons or cardinals. (Angels ate them too, about a day after they were put in.)

With Angels it depends on the fish. I keep big Angels with Cardinal Tetras without a problem. I put the Cardinals in the tank and 2 weeks later added tiny angels and they have been living together for 4 years. I've noticed with tetras also that they will split up and not school when there is no larger fish that might pose a threat(yah I know kinda obvious). But back to the biotope thing I would personally go 5 or 6 angels, 8 Panda Cory's, School of tetras or simaliar, and 3 Bristlenose plecos(algae control).
Good Luck!

I love angels. If you could get your hands on altium angels, they would be beautiful in a 125 gallon. They grow larger than scalare angels. Altiums might eat small tetras. if u raise young angels with neons and cardinals, they most likely wont eat or harass them. Its hard to have an amazon biotope without cardinals and a school of them is amazing. Discus are the king of tropical fish but research all the effort it takes to keep them. People differ on this though. Great options are discus, angels, bolivian and blue rams (not amazon, they live in the venezualan grasslands) but they are cool, CARDINAL TETRAS, rummy nose tetras (will school with the cardinals, have the tightest schooling habit of any of the tetras), hatchet fish (great for inhabiting the very top of the tank, pencil fish, cories, otos. Sword plants are a must and driftwood. If you use a canister filter u could add some peat to the mix.

Altums are worse than scalares when it comes to eating small fish, and these are wild strain only. You cant buy them tank bred. And they eat any small fish, tetra or not. But yes, they are magnificent; and you could keep them with discus too. (Requires same care level and water parameters. they are much harder to keep than scalares.)

While I love Angels, I think the Discus & their brilliant colors will actually look better as the centerpiece fish in this setup. With the live plants in here, the focus is actually blended between fish & plants so the more colorfull the fish, the better it will look.

I'm out here in Paradise...also known as San Diego, CA!

Baby Discus would be awesome...but shipping from MN could be an issue!

have to see what happens with the tank first.

Thanks!

I've got the same size tank (125) that will eventually be setup for discus. right now I'm working on getting the plants to grow out. then I'll have to order some discus because I can't find them anywhere within 200 miles.
keep us updated, I'd like to see what you end up doing

Gosh if this was a 180 or larger, i would say add a FW stingray to the mix, have it mainly a sandy bottom and live plants off to the sides and back of the tank with some nice Driftwood in it.
so a stingray with discus and tetras would be really cool.

On the positive side, you could keep discus with watever tetras you want. (Cardinals/neons and Discus are absolutely striking together.)

Dont stingrays eat small fish? (Dont know, thats why Im asking.)
