suggestions for a 55 gallon tank setup

what kind of filter do you think i need, heater, and all the other stuff. i plan on using a trickle filter because i think that is best.

There is a really good sticky on setting up a tank in the newbie forum.

For more specific answers though it is usually recommended on here to not run any filter but rather to rely on a deep sand bed and live rock to perform filtration.

As for the heater a 3-5 watts per gallon is a good rule for size. For a 55 gallon 150 watts would be right below that value. Personally I would use a 200 watt. As for brands Ebo Jager and Tronic seem to be good heaters.

sorry just read that you were doing fish only if you are not going to have live rock or a deep sand bed you will need a filter but I do not have any reccomendations for you in this case.

I think ebo-jager are the uber badazz heaters. Visitherm aren't bad either. I would definitely stay away from the real cheap stuff you can find over at petsmart...

I use a single 250w Ebo-Jager in my 125g african tank and it handles the load just fine. Redundancy is a good thing, so if you can afford two I'd do it. Ebo's are expensive little toys though.
