suggestions for coolwater tank

So I fell in love with the Celestial Pearl's and want to start a small tank up for them. Maybe 10 -20 gal. tank. I know White Clouds can do cooler water and peppered cory's. Anything else other then gold fish come to mind? I was thinking of adding them to the larger tank I'm going to start buy aquaavisor nixed that. I want Pearl gourami's in that tank and Rainbow fish. Heeelp! Thanks

Here's a list I have in my Favorites folder. Of course, since your tank is on the smaller size, only choose size appropriate fish. Zebra Danio's and Guppies are other cold-water fish that are commonly sold as tropical since they are hardy fish and can do well in a broad temperature range.

How cold is cold?? 60+?? Neons and Red Phantoms like water in the lower 70's. --72??

msjinkz has some meteor minows that do well in cool water and they are pretty awesome!

I read that CPD's need 64-72 degree's, is that correct? I've already seen
contradicting info<
I love the white mountain's, I recently saw the golden ones at the lfs,very beautiful and I think they would look nice with CPDs.

When you see conflicting info... your best bet is to go to http://Fishbase.org, which is ONLY updated by people involved in fish identification and collection... not just us mere hobbyists. ;-)

Read all of the links on the page for all reported info on Fishbase but the general Biology section says:

Inhabits small and shallow ponds, at most 30 cm deep and maintained by seepage or springs. The water is clear unless roiled with water temperatures of 22-24°C (LV converts -- 71.6F to 75.2F) in January 2007. The ponds have luxuriant submerged aquatic vegetation mainly one or two species of Elodea or Anacharis (Hydrocharitaceae). Present terrestrial vegetation is open grassland. Three other species were collected in the ponds, a Microrasbora similar to M. rubescens; a small species of Yunnanilus; and a piscivorous snakehead, Channa harbourtbutleri

So yes... they are cool water fish but not cold water fish.

Seriouslyfish lists the temp 68-79. My water stays around 80 (no heater) & my guys are happy. Just something to ponder, dont think you have to limit yourself to cooler temps. They'd probably breed more in warmer temps...

A species only 10g could be very rewarding. I have Endler's Livebearers with mine, which act as dithers & are small enough not to throw off perspective with the little CPD.

Thank you all Fishycat, that's a good idea. Once the 75 gets set up I'm thinking of putting a small species tank in my bedroom. I'm going to set up my tank this Sat. can't wait!! I want to see what the temp is without a heater, even in winter we keep the house nice and warm. Should be ok for lower temp fish, if I have to do upper 70's into 80 I'll put a heater in.
