I am setting up a 120 gallon tank for SA cichlids. What will be the best heater I should use? How many watts?

Money will be no object. I want one that is convenient and has great quality.

Any suggestions? thx

i love ebo jager heaters. i would recommend a dual heater setup for you, especially in a larger tank. this keeps a safeguard against boiling your fish or freezing them should a heater malfunction. i would say that 2 200 or 2 250W heaters placed at opposide ends of the tank would be just fine. make sure you have good water flow around them to mix up the hot and cold water. good luck

I also prefer Ebo's - I use them exclusively in all my tanks, sumps, etc. Two 200's would probably work well if you keep the house at a normal temp. I use two Ebo 150's on my 100g, but I keep my house in the low 70's.

Ebo Jager

From what I can tell, most like Ebo Jager. I have a Proquatics and a generic pre-set heater and will replace the generic with an Ebo Jager. The Proquatics 300 watt I have seems fine. I do need reliability for the high temps my Discus need...so, may even replace that one for an Ebo..

the newer ebo-jager heaters seem to be more failure prone.

I too am using all tronic heaters and am having good luck with them.

I think the rule is 3 watts per gallon. In your case you have 120G so you need about 360 watts worth of heater. I'm not quit sure what you should go with but a dual heater set up will do the trick.

Any heater can fail, and if it fails in the 'on' position you generally have more problems. I read several fish-related boards with regularity, and I've not noticed any rash of complaints about Ebo Jagers. (In fact, when people mention they fail, it's generally received with some surprise.) Tronics have a good reputation, but I just had one (about 18 months old) fail in the 'on' position.

There are two ways to protect yourself from heater failure (that I can think of, anyway). First, your can buy brands that have a good track record. Ebos and Tronics certainly fall into that category; I'd stay away from anything with the name PennPlax or Accura on it. Second, you can make sure that no one single heater in your tank is large enough to cook your fish should it fail. Distribute your heating over multiple heaters, each too small by itself to raise your tank temperature beyond safe limits. For example, in our cold house, I use about 4-5 watts per gallon to heat my tanks. On a 75 gallon tank, I need 300- 375 watts of heater to maintain a stable temp. I use two 150w or three 100w heaters; by itself, none of the smaller heaters could fry my fish (at least during winter months).

Good heaters are not much more expensive than crummer heaters. It doesn't make sense to me to scrimp on them.

Jim

A lfs around here has a couple green ebo's left want to get them.
Ive had 10 heaters fail in the last 3 yrs most were less than a year old:(
ebo is the only way to go. IMHO
