Although I don't have the time to set up the new aquarium, I already put the shelf up (which takes about 10 minutes). I will try to get away with such a configuration as shown in the pic below. I will have a shelf for some kind of storage box on the bottom, and the lower tank will be elevated. This is both, for more viewing convenience for me and for less viewing convenience for my indoor tiger. I hope that the working space will turn out to be enough. The top shelf will harbor my 10 gallon quarantine tank for the beginning. It should be cat-safe up there (at least with mine, who never jumps anywhere she cannot see).

What is missing from the pic is some kind of reference. Let's just say that the top of the tank in the pic is the height of my navel. I will still be able to work in a tank on the top shelf without the need for anything to step on.

Well, your setup has the advantage that you have slightly more work space above the tanks. I will see soon enough whether I will curse the day I made the decision to set it up like this :D.

I recently bought a set of shelves from costco for $60 that claim to hold 1500# on each shelf. I stood on them and jumped after I built them, and they didn't buckle. There are 5 shelves, and you can either build it as a single tower or in a workbench layout, straight or 'L' shaped. I'm going back for another set today for my fish closet.

Hi, I thought I'd post an update how this turned out. The image quality is not the best, and the aquariums are not in best shape, but you will get the picture.

Result: It works quite well :).
