Me and my girlfriend just got a free 40 gallon tank from her friends dad. We already have it set up and cycled now we just need fish. We want community peaceful fish. We were thinking 4 schools of 6 fish (maybe tetras?) and a couple of dwarf gourami's. We are each going to pick out 2 different schools to put in it since we are sharing the tank. I am thinking tetras. I have seen the rummynose tetras and I really like them. I do not know what other kinds I would like and she does not either. My question is: What fish would you recommend to go in a 40 gallon that do well in groups of 6-8. Also they would need to get along with dwarf gouramis. If you need anymore info let me know. Thanks.

that sounds like a pretty cool tank.

go for one (of 24) or two (of 12) schools instead of 4 of 6 individuals. you'll see more activity and better colors with bigger schools.

stick with only one dwarf gourami. you may also want to check out an angel as a centerpiece, and they can be kept with dwarf gouramis.

I've found that single dwarf gouramis get to be obnoxious, so I suggest keeping a pair or trio.

An inexpensive fish that I just added to my own tank is blue leopard longfin danios. They have a great luminous ghostly look to them. Any of the longfin danios would be great on top.

You might want to consider sparkling gouramis instead of dwarves

Wow thanks for all the quick replies. Ill look into the angelfish. One question though will the angelfish eat tetras? I will also mention to her about 2 groups (of 12) instead of 4 groups (of 6). We would like to have one type of center fish such as gouramis or angelfish so I doubt we have both along with the other fish.

Angelfish would have the ability to eat smaller tetras, and most likely would do so. I've read that if the Angelfish is introduced last and as a baby that there is more of a chance it will leave the smaller fish alone. So far that has been my experience. My Angelfish has not bothered my platy fry that are existing, but new ones are gone within a day or two and my Angel did not harrass the bigger fish either, even my long fin danios, however she did do some nipping to my female betta that I recently added, but that did not last long. I think it was more or less them deciding who got the be the top queen of the tank.

Alright I don't think the angelfish with the tetras would be such a good idea. Ill go with the gouramis. Any other suggestions let me know. Thanks to all who have replied so far.
