Suitable fish for a 5 gallon tank?

I dunno, I think a small group of dwarf corys could work as a species tank or with a mellow betta. Cherry shrimp (again lots of hiding places) & a betta.
How many dwarf cories would you suggest? I don't think I could do a species tank, I'd absolutely want a betta in there with them.

For schooling or shoaling species I'd get 6 & keep very up on testing to get the hang of how often water changes would be needed to keep tank parameters stable. Some dwarf corys are very bottom centric (habrosus); others like pygmaus are almost mid-water swimmers most of the time. I have to say I've never had a tank as small as 5g, 10g is my smallest ever.

As a loach lover I have to say 6 rosy loaches might be awesome instead of corys but they're kinda shy...but oh so pretty bottom fish! I loved mine in a 20g long but gave them away recently so I can try co2 without endangering fish.

Unfortunately, this idea seems to persist due to movies and TV shows but goldfish are not appropriate for small tanks. The whole "only grow to the size of their home" is basically a myth. The reason that happens is the fish either dies from ammonia/nitrite/nitrate poisoning before it grows too big, or it is stunted and still dies from one of those things. Goldfish can reach sizes of 12 inches or more for the more torpedo shaped "wild type" ones and the fancy round bodies ones reach larger than a softball. Additionally, if kept in good condition they can live for upwards of 25 years.
