^That is exactly why. They basically function like a scrubber but harder to keep clean. I'm not doubting that they can be used and used with great results. I guess what I should have said is that the cons far outweigh the pros.

It's like counter current skimmers that use air stones... Do they work? Yes, and very well with a simple design.

Does that mean that they're better than a more modern turbo/Venturi skimmer? Probably not.

Technology ages in this hobby just as any other - I personally believe in simplicity, and a balanced system. I shouldn't have to change my water 20% once or twice a week. Nobody should. If you do it means that something in your system is upsetting the balance.

That's just my opinion though. And I have to admit that there is something to be said for our ability as aquarists to overload a system and still allow everything to thrive in ways it never could in nature. I do find that Aspect of the hobby extremely intriguing. :)
