Is a sump necessary in saltwater tanks, have a 55 gallon tank that I would like to do SW. Have never done one. If I put enough LR in it do I need a sump? There are so many choices out there all of it just confuses me. Thought about a FOWLR tank with approx 5 fish and maybe some crabs/shrimp etc.

Hi there, any welcome to the forums..

Answer to your question is no, you, you dont NEED a sump..Its just that a sump is always going to be better for quite a few reasons...

Your plan sounds good to me really..Make sure you have 1 to 1.5lbs of live rock in the tank and a sand, and you will be fine with that..

What have you got in mind for your fish?

Well as you can imagine my kids want an elmo fish, so for sure one of those. Other than that, Im not sure. Any suggestions?

What kind of lighting will I need to approx 80 pounds of LR.

this thing won't let me edit my previous posts. Make that a NEMO fish.

Lighting all depends on whether your going to be keeping corals..If its just going to be a fish only with live rock, then normal stock lighting would be good enough...

In a 55, i would have a pair of clowns, a yellow watchman goby and maybe a blenny...

Best thing to do is make a wish list of fish and then do lots of research on them first then make a decision on whether you can cater for their needs good enough...some fish are really hard to look after and are very demanding..

Stock lighting?? Sorry to sound dumb, normal fluorescent lights? What wattage is necessary?

Sorry, when i refer to stock lighting, i men the standard lighting that comes built into an aquarium hood...

I cant realy advise you on what lighting to buy as i live in the UK and the lights that you people have available in the US are totally different..

Just to go one step farther, if one decided on just fish and not Live rock, what is that entailing. Do I still use a skimmer, is a sump now necessary. Does that do the filtering, or do I need to add additional filtration. I appreciate your help.

Hiya..

If you just went for a fish only, then yes, you would have to provide filtration via another method like a hob filter or a canister filter..

A sump is still not neccesary, personaly, i would still use a skimmer..
