Sump/ overflow questions

does the overflow box size in terms of GPH and return pump GPH depend on the sump tank size? if yes, could anyone recommend what would be good for a 15g sump? is 15g sump good enough for a 60g tank?

i think in case of a long vacation it would just be safe to not use sump as it would only have live rock, macro algae. i already have a hob skimmer that i would then transfer over to the main tank from sump and anyways bfore leaving on a vacation a big water change would definitely help...

anyone uses Automatic top-off controller ATO? does it need another reservoir to draw water from and fill the main tank and sump when the water level drops? it seems to be a safe bet.

Hey Ace, I think i've decided to go with a lifereef pre-filter due to me reading alot of reviews of people who have had flooding issues with the CPR models!- These are guarenteed to never overflow or anything - they are a little more expensive but from what i've read they are really good- they have a single box with 600GPH and a double with 1200GPH- which do you think would be better for my tank? they 600GPH i would assume? And they I can get the Mag pump 7.

How does that sound?

I would also go with the 600 model, much smaller footprint in your tank. If you don't mind losing the extra space in the tank though, the 1200 is a better option IF you can live with that one drawback. You get more surface skimming with the 1200 and less chance of a clog/overflow problem.

Nothing is ever guaranteed when draining water from one tank to another. Even drilled tanks aren't bulletproof. That said, I would definately choose the Lifereef overflow box over any other. Worth the extra $. I started out cheap and had a few floods I didn't like, then tried a CPR and still had a flood when the aqualifter clogged.

So ya, Lifereef 600 w/ Mag7 would be a fantastic combination.

Sweet, I'm really trying to aviod any floods cause my dad would be really upset- especially if I told him there was any chance of it he probably wouldn't let me get a cheaper product. I feel pretty confident with this though. - If I didn't go for this combo though I could probably do a dual with a higher rated pump- but I don't think i'm going to put out more money for it if this will be satisfactory and that will take up more room.

Do you think with 125 gallon tank I would be better off going with the dual? and get like a 9.5 pump?

Thanks alot!

I use a 800GPH overflow with a 750GPH return pump. The actual return at 4' of head is 500 +/- GPH. I had to put a shut-off valve and close it down part way to throttle my 9.5 as it had too much flow for the overflow to handle. I swapped the pump out with a RIO 2600 which is rated 750GPH at 0' head and 520 @ 4'. The pump now runs wide open with no problems.
