If I had a 55 gallon tank, and I wanted a sump, but didn't want to build a sump with the pvc pipes and the whole acrylic tank thing with the chambers in it and the buldheads, could i use say, a wet/dry filter as a sump? And if I did, what would i need to take out/modify/etc.? I know i would probably want to take out bioballs, but what would i replace those with? Thanks.

Pull the bio balls, and you can replace them with live rock and some sand, or just leave it empty. I've ran a couple of setups that way, and currently have a 15 gallon wet/dry as the sump for my 10--it includes a built in protien skimmer--not a great one, but better than nothing.
