hi all thinking of building a sump on the back of my tank it will be 36in long 24in high and 5in wide just wondering how thick the glass will need to be my tank is 10mm but i dont think it will need to be as thick as that because it will not have much pressure in it.Thanks
Thats pretty interesting. Since the tank is completely separate from the main in so far as pressure. I would look into using acrylic (acrylic glue) if possible so as to be lighter. I would also try and make my hanger by heat bending the longer piece of acrylic that would be resting up against the tank wall.
But I suppose glass is cheaper and you could actually integrate the tank wall as part of the sump. In that case I would just go with standard glass thickness for hight since your volume is small. I think 24" high requires 6mm minimum no matter how short or narrow.
Pressure is dependent on depth, NOT volume. there will be the same force pushing out on the wall of your sump as the front of the tank. That said, I think 1/4" glass will work as long as you brace it in the center on the top to keep it from bowing.
