i have a tank
6ft x 18 x 18

going to set it up for salt water, obviously.

want some live rock, bit of coral and a few fish, havent actually decided yet, (probably not the best way to go about it lol)

now im going to make a sump/refugumi/what ever u wanna call it

what would be the best size tank to use?

what would be the best way to set it up?

what would be the best stuff to put in it?

I could put the protein skimmer (when i get one) and heater down there so they arent in the main tank too right??

Thanks

Tim

Hiya Tim..

With sumps, get as big as you can fit in your stand, leaving working room around it...

There are lots of different ways to setup the sump, your best off to start with, browse through the DIY section and look at the various threads on sump setups and form a master plan then ask questions that arise on here...Each thread will tell you if that persons design worked ok, needed modifying etc etc..

Things that go in the sump are like the protein skimmer, heater, return pump, some live rock and sand, macro algae to remove nutrients from the water like phosphates and nitrates..

Hope this helps a little Tim..

ok unless i make a new stand (which im considering) the biggest tank i can fit is a 2ft x 1ft x 1ft (because of legs, etc) probly not big enough right?

also, is this skimmer any good? can i use it in the sump?

Thanks (not much on our ebay, might look on the US one and get it sent over)

and the design of the sump i'll probly go with is pretty basic..

I would concider making a new stand mate...I am no DIY expert, but i am nearly finished building my DIY project stand and its looking really good.

That way, you can build it to accomodate the sump of your choice then.

Not really heard to much about Jebo skimmers. I kow they sell them here in the UK, so i will ask a few LFS here to find out what they are like for you..

A sump like the picture is just great..Its basic and meets the need....Good stuff..

yeah, will most likely build a new stand..

most of our fish shops here have either none or very little saltwater fish and accessories

already spotted yours a few days ago.. opened it and went "hmmm.. can any one say OVERKILL" lol

Interesting wood size, i used the same size stuff for the legs on my last 4 foot stand, but that was only cos it was laying around.. fair bit of weight in the tanks tho, best to be safe than sorry..

Im not too keen on the stand that came with my tank.. just looking at it it doesnt look like the strongest stand around, would probably hold the weight quite easily, but i dunno lol

well after just reading some reviews in google on that Jebo skimmers, apparently they are junk.. lol.. give that one a miss.. chances are, i'll be getting one sent over from the US or something.. by the looks of it..

On the wood size and stand...I wanted to acheive a couple of things...

1) a sturdy base that i know i can reply on
2) a large centre piece for the dinning room that will look impressive..

Glad you found out before hand about the skimmer, saved yourself money already by not buying junk equipment..

Am sure the people on here from the US will point you in the right direction to a good skimmer..

On your existing stand, it will of been tested for the weight it can carry...But i do know that they do sometimes look so flimsy and light, but it will be made to do the job its designed for..
