I've had a sun/eclipse catfish (Horabagrus brachysoma) for a little while and he's a good 6" long now. Usually he hides during the day but sometimes I catch him doing "aerobics". There is a log branch that extends to the side of the tank, creating a little clearance between it and the gravel. I can usually find him swimming in circles around the branch: goes underneath it, swims up, rotates, goes down the otherside and back under again. He'll do this for several minutes.

Could this be stress, boredom, or is he just eccentric?

i have 3 sun cats in my tank. they are not your tipical catfish in that they arent really shy or nocturnal. mine all swim in and out the ship i have aaallll day long and never stop. every once in a while they dart back and forth through the tank. so yea, ild say its pretty normal....

i have 2 black bull heads in my 55 and they swim in a circle with their heads tutching the glass and they do that all day every day and they seam preatty healthy i personally think its just normal but i could be wrong

mine hides all the time. the only time i see it is when i just fed, and then its only long enough to grab enough food, then its back to his hiding spot. my cousins does the same thing. from the sounds of it they may be schooling fish, which would be why the 3 in one tank are always out. the one that is by itself (from the original post) may just not mind being out in the daytime for some reason.

i would agree, i had 2 in mine for about a month in a half. then one died for god knows what reason...but i added 2 fresh guys after a few days of watching my one sun cats sit around and now all three of the buzz around. IMO i think in the case of the sun cats more is better.....yet ive also heard they are shoaling cats.

This sounds kinda like my fish which I'm trying to find out what he is? He is orange,6''long, a bottomfeeder, and a member of the catfish family. He is very very active. When he wants to sleep he goes in his little boat and sleeps, then out he comes to swim and play. He is 5 years old and very very friendly. Does anybody know what kind of fish I might have. I have never seen any since I bought him at a fish store and they went out of buisness soon as I got him.

do a google image search for sun catfish. there may also be a profile on this site's species profile database.

so you have a sun cat, pacu, and african cichlids all in the same tank? has anyone brought it up to you yet that you shouldnt have mixed all of those?
