Sun Sun Filters

Yeah, some of the shapes are slightly different, but with a design that similar chances are that the same OEM makes all three filters. The differences in the Marineland are mostly cosmetic.

Computer components are the same way; one company will make a product for two or three or four different brands. Some may be visually identical, some may have some variations that a specific brand requested-different heatsinks, different capacitors and other SMTs, slight circuit layout changes to tweak an aspect of performance that they want to either market as a feature or save some money on-but they're all basically the same device, and they all came out of the same factory.

I'd bet money that that's the case here. Even the flow rate discrepancy between the filter CWO posted and the C-220 is easily explained: Marineland rates it with the media installed, the "Perfect" unit is rated with no media, and possibly a little bit of fudge factor. Again, this is done all the time with computer components.

The other option is that it's a ripoff of the JBJ and/or the Marineland. Either way, if it doesn't leak or go through pumps and it comes close to matching the Marinelands' performance, it's worth a good deal more than what it costs.

And $40 is not implausibly low for something like this, especially if it's coming directly out of China. People would be stunned if they knew what the markups on a lot of retail products are; $40 from a wholesaler for a filter that stickers for $130 isn't an unusual markup. If it were $19.95, I'd be skeptical, but $40 doesn't set off warning bells for me.

Oh, I get how big business works I just wanted to see if there was any validity to the claim.

In the case of the Sunsun the validity is by first hand experiences, testimony and spread by word-of-mouth. I am one of those witnesses and currently have my Sunsun 304 as an auxiliary filtering my 100 acrylic tank with Koi and it works better then expected (very good). What is lacking is the big marketing and advertisement campaigns that the big manufacturers use to mesmorize new and old customers with fantastic claims. Unfortunatly as a society we identify advertising campaigns with validity and prestige, and while some claims are true and some products exceptional (FX5, Magnum, Ocean Clear) others are no better then their clone counterparts. For $38 the Sunsun all upside in value and performance but downside with respect to the customer not being able to be identified with the big name brand and trappings of advertisement that are accepted as validity, while the clone is the poor mans canister when actually its the smart mans canister.

I just hope they clone the FX5 becasue Ill be the first to buy one and feel wise about it, if the cloning is done right just like the Sunsun.:D

Just want to add that I got my Sunsun a week ago. I have never had a canister before and the directions that come with it are slim to none. I figured it out and put it together within an hour and have had no troubles yet so far. I bought from kool_goods and the experience was a good one. I only wish they were on sale when I purchased! Still a good price either way.

Guess I'm just skeptical as I had the Jebo Cfs4 and loved it at first until it leaked all over my cabinet and floor a year later.

Still no actual proof that sunsun makes parts for marineland that I have seen yet. I am just curious that's all...I wish there was a Marineland rep on the forums :)

i doubt marineland would ever disclose sunsun makes anything for them. if they did why buy marineland products when you can buy sunsun for far less.

MOTT:
There is no way a 38 dollar filter will have the same quality as the bigger brands ie rena, fluval, marineland, eheim. I would bank on it.

Your statement is painted with a very broad brush....how do you quantify if?

From my point of view, I have had them all over the years and the SunSun is the best...nothing quieter, ultra reliable and by far the best value for money. But, hey, perhaps I am just lucky.....

However, one critisism, after measuring flowrate I find they are over stated by about 20%.

1 x SunSun 530 with UV
2 x SunSun 375 with UV
2 x SunSun 264

I base my facts on buying cheap in the past, like I said I owned the jebo canister. Parts felt cheap and weak. I read the same thing with the sun sun as far as baskets and pipes go.

I should buy one just to compare for myself.

Btw all filter makers fudge flow rates, I doubt there are any cans that produce what manufactures claim.

I've been doing some work with an OEM partner at my job, here is a little insight about OEMing.

an OEM manufacturer has a product that a company wants made for them. Marineland contacts sunsun and says "hey, please make this product for us but with the following requirements: grey, smaller primer moved to the right, remove the ridges on the top, add black plastic around the handles, move the feet to the center." Sunsun then makes it to marineland specs and then sends it over to marineland. marineland may then have their own company, or other company, make new or different baskets for the filter media. or they may even have sunsun make them for them.

I was suspicious at first, especially after hearing how top clips would break, the hose housing clamping piece would break and that the basket handles are weak. So, to protect against breakages I coated all seal surfaces with a silicon grease and when, for example, I fit the top I press it down firmly into place rather than heave on the clips to pull it down. Same with the hose "over-centre' clamping device. The basket I remove by holding the handle right at where it clips to the basket and easing it out rather than grab the handle in the middle and yank on it..

I hope you try one and your experiences are good. Best of luck...
