Sunfish going into main tank?!

Enjoy him..I have longear sunfish in the creek right outside my door and they are truly beautiful...

We have blue gill in our pond that is natural spring fed, the water comes out in the spring in the 50-55 degree range. The ones in the spring itself are so much more colorfull than those in the pond. Its simply amazing. Even the bass that live in there are amazing.

What kind of sunfish is it, do you know? I have longear, green, and blue gill. I just love them. I agree with everyone else, I would maybe put a heater in the ten and slowly raise the temp to the temp in the 55 before adding the sunfish.

Looks like a bluegill. I've never had problems getting sunnies to eat prepared foods. They are curious fish and will try to eat anything. He should be all right in the 55 short term; those temps are a little on the warm side, but not too high for him. These guys grow fast. They switch to a more fish-heavy diet once they reach a couple inches long, so keep a close watch; once he starts chasing your tetras it's time to take him out.

I'm sure you know better, BK, but just a general warning for others reading this thread: NEVER return fish to the wild after they have been in captivity. It's OK to release them into a private pond that has no connection to other waters (even during floods), but otherwise wild-caught fish must be re-homed or euthanized. There are several emergent diseases destroying populations of fish, amphibians, and other aquatics around the world; contamination from captive stocks is certainly one factor in the spread of these diseases.

Thanks a bunch notop for the post. lol thanks for the warning. I will most likely donate him to a friend once he gets aggressive. Just want to experience its growing process.

Great minds think alike.. I actually did add a heater yesterday to the 10 to raise the temp.:grinyes:

I would be very careful I had a friend who added one to his main tank. His problem is that the fish had some internal parasite that did not affect the wild fish but devastated his angels.

This is one of the few times I would recommend treating the sun fish with an parasitical med before putting him in the main tank.

Very nice Sunfish good luck with him

I wouldn't do it unless you are willing to lose a fish. Just my 2 cents :grinyes:
