Straight forward. I just added a marineland c-220 cannister filter. I dont like the bubble from an airstone anymore. The tank is real quiet with just a tad bit of rippling from the return. The tank is a 30 gal high. Eventually will be planted. AM I going to suffocate this fish since there isnt that much surface agitation?

Just be sure to angle your return nozzle so that the water circulates in the tank. You can mess around with the direction of the water to get the best motion. Then keep an eye on you fish. If they start gasping at the surface then you know the O2 levels are depleted.

Both my 100 and 120 has CO2 injection and NO surface movement (filter output pointed down)---and see my stock of fish.
I moved my return nozzel up to the tank and have a few very nice ripples going on. So far the fish appear to be ok.

IMO---Most tanks are not over-crowded to the point of needing surface agitation. It is true that my tanks are heavily planted, but I do not think they add any O2 into tank (Imaybe wrong). If your tank is not over crowded, and the temp is not very high (in the high 80s) surface movement is not really needed. Just for looks and surface film oil
