surface skimmer

Yes it takes in water from both the top and the bottom. The way it works is that little screw raises the plastic 'skimmer' and if you get it at the right height the water trickles inside of it without anything effecting your intake rate.

It works wonders on a tank and cleans up surface scum in seconds but it also clogs up with plant debris and trap some food so expect regular maint.

There's a good trick to get the surface level right or sometimes it will take on too much air and send zillions of bubbles into your tank/filter. It just makes some noise until you lower the skimmer to the new waterlevel.

I have not tried it with my fluval yet but it is something I plan to do. Right now I have the hose going into my Hagen powerhead and swap it out with a pre-filter whenever i claen my plants and theres debris everywhere.

It can fit into aquaclear powerheads but ive never tried with anything else. It doesn't fit entirely too well though so you may ahve to bugger with the hosing and the ph intake.

It's really awesome though. I think anyone with an open-top tank gets once. Surface is crystal clear.

If you've ever maintained a pool you'll know how awseome a surface skimmer can be. =)

ohya btw powerheads make great water polishers if you use some sort of pre-filter =)

With your intake setup with the surface skimmer you are looking at some visably clear water.

btw i find the powerhead works best with a pre-filter ... hooking the skimmer up can sometimes lead to plant debris blocking your powerheads outflow.
