I'll be danged. While doing my WC/gravel vac this afternoon, I saw something unusual moving and bent down with my nose against the glass and lo and behold- a single platy fry! I didn't even realize anyone was expecting! My female tuxedo platy had been looking a little plump, (but so do I, and I'm most certainly not pregnant) but because she's black on the back half, I never saw a gravid spot. With four platys and six danios in the tank, that fry must be a very clever little guy (or gal) to have survived!

i think i am gonna pick some femail plattys, maybe have some babies, give most away and keep the nice ones... The only pet place for a long ways is walmart... the guy ther is pritty good, do you think they will take them?

I know that many stores will take (or even buy) fry. The only way to be sure would be to ask. I thought eventually I'd set up a birthing/nursery tank, but I just wasn't ready yet and figured any fry would wind up a tasty snack. But this little thing had other plans. It's so cute- hangs around one plant and creeps out when other fish aren't nearby. Then if someone swims close, it just sneaks backs into the leaves again. I did notice when I fed them, it ventured out while everyone was at the surface and (I think) grabbed a couple bites that had escaped the frenzy and drifted down.

I just can't get over the fact that it was there at all! I feel like a proud grandma or something. Sheesh...........

Congrates!!

I discovered my first platy fry about 6 months ago so i know how you feel. I also found them during the waterchange, but not until they were in the bucket (good thing i didn't use the python that time). The trip threw the gravel tube didnt seem to hurt them any, they all lived. Since then, i've added dense breeding grass to my tank to at least give them half a chance.
