It sounds like Sushi was getting on in years if he had been in your care and his previous owners for 3+ years. He was probably at least six months old and maybe a year old when he was originally obtained from a LFS. I think older fish, like older people, are more susceptible to health problems.

Leopardess, I think Celura was using Bettafix rather than Bettamax. I don't know anything about Bettafix other than it is used to combat fungus and bacterial problems. I agree that Bettamax is a low level preventative rather than a front line defense against an existing problem. I use Bettamax when quarantining a new betta before putting him in his real home. Also, sorry to hear about your loss as well. He was a good looking betta.
