Sushi's in trouble, please help

It sounds like Sushi was getting on in years if he had been in your care and his previous owners for 3+ years. He was probably at least six months old and maybe a year old when he was originally obtained from a LFS. I think older fish, like older people, are more susceptible to health problems.

In Japanese there is a common saying, "ganbatte kudasai", which means to persevere.

Leopardess, I think Celura was using Bettafix rather than Bettamax. I don't know anything about Bettafix other than it is used to combat fungus and bacterial problems. I agree that Bettamax is a low level preventative rather than a front line defense against an existing problem. I use Bettamax when quarantining a new betta before putting him in his real home. Also, sorry to hear about your loss as well. He was a good looking betta.

I agree that he was older which makes him more susceptible. Also, just because he was never in a heated tank before doesn't mean it can't affect him. Perhaps it finally caught up with him and/or there were big temp. fluctuations recently. I assume it was a combo if his age, the heater, and no water changes in conjucntion with overfeeding.

Celura, you recently purchased another betta, correct? It is very possible that you transferred the fungus from the new betta to the old one. The new one, being younger, probably had a better immune system and was able to resist the fungus, whereas the older Sushi could not.

I'm sorry for your loss. I've lost 3 bettas from fungus. One came with fungus from the store, and the other 2 contracted it from another purchase that had recently been purchased. It's really hard to lose fish in general, but bettas are special because they have their unique personalities.

I'm not sure how the new Betta could have infected Sushi with anything. They have totally separate bowls, separate nets, I use different feeding utensils, etc just for that reason. Alex was never anywhere near Sushi. If there's something I'm missing here, please let me know. I don't want this happening again.

I have begun the sterilization process on Sushi's old bowl. When that's complete I will add new water and gravel and move Alex in there. I may get another Betta later, but I don't know yet at this point.

Yes, Sushi was definitely special. He will be missed a great deal.

Oh, poor Sushi, and poor you!

I just lost one of our corys on Monday, and we only had him for a couple of weeks. I felt so bad for him, because I don't know what happened either. I think he was sick when we got him, but I actually shed some tears for the little guy.
