SW Question

have you owned a fission skimmer?

i have and for the money they are great

No, I don't have a nano tank. But have heard enough about them from trusted sources as well as a general search to see that the overwhelming comments on them are negative. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I'm surprised to see a positive comment on them. Kind of like I would be if someone recommended a Prizm Skimmer <hives>

Thats great! Sincerely I love to see kids involved in the hobby. I've been wanting to add books to my club library for many of the kids that come to our meetings. Have you run into any that are kid friendly?
unfortunately no i haven't but its not often kids are into the hobby all kids enjoy looking but most do not enjoy the work lol

Just wait for the next "Finding Nemo" and there will be another rush for kids to get involved. I can't believe how many kids I started seeing at my LFS right after Nemo came out.. of course, every one running to the clown tanks screaming Nemo! I had to keep explaining to all the parents that Dori was not a easy fish to take care of though.. everyone wants to have the entire cast in their first SW tank. :)

And Prizm skimmer... *shiver*... Bad bad memories..

It doesn't get any better. My 18 year old still rolls his eyes when I tell him I want him to do a water change for "our tank". :lipssealedsmilie:

Sincerely though, keep an eye out for any books that explain the basics to someone younger than 14. Not the advanced stuff of reef chemistry, reactors, and such but about responsibility and such. I'll let you know if I find anything too.

Eh, mine is still sitting around here in the box with it's expensive price tag, and no I didn't buy it exactly. But I won't sell it, I feel too guilty having someone deal with it.

And I know exactly what you mean about the Nemo stuff. I worked at a LFS for a very brief time and it wasn't just the kids you had to explain that to but the adults as well. One adult wanted to take home a maroon clown and a powder blue tang they had misidentified as Nemo and Dory and they got a bit peeved off when I wouldn't bag them up and sell them a 12g Eclipse for them.

Well, I have 3 tanks available to SW that are currently doing freshwater... A 10, 30, and 55.

I know that the larger the tank the better stablity but also the more money...

Well the price difference between the Remora and the Fission is a HUGE difference... I would go with the fission but if it causes too many problems... Im not sure if its worth it then...

What exactly happens to the fission though.. does it break down or just not work properly?

My guess, like most cheap skimmers, it doesn't work properly. I spent $99 on an InstantOcean 150 skimmer, $129.99 on a Prizm Pro skimmer, $150 on a generic "250G" skimmer, and you know where they are all at? In the TRASH. They suck that bad, might as well send me your money if you think you can get away buying cheap equipment in this hobby. I spent about $200 total on my remora a couple months ago, and there is not even a comparison to the others.

InstantOcean skimmer - clean once a week, and cup only 1/2 full
Prizm - never get it to work at all
Generic - about as good as the InstantOcean, just bigger, empty 1/10th of cup a week and clean
Remora - empty and clean 2x a DAY!
