Swelling in honey gourami - diagnosis help!

Hi all,

I have had this honey gourami for about four months (the red sort); he has developed a strange swelling. I've tried to take a decent photo without success, so I will describe it:

it extends from behind the internal organs to the caudal peduncle, underneath and parallel to the spinal column, like a long, sausage-shaped bubble; it seems to be transparent, although the fish is pretty translucent along there anyway.

Seen from above, the fish sides visibly bulge out along the swelling.

Apart from this, this fish is pretty active and healthy, although it looks paler than it used to. All the other fish in the tank look fine.

Can anyone suggest what this might be? - I haven't found anything like this on the net.
 
Might as well say it before the experts ask. Can you give your water parameters and any other information that may help?
 
Water parameters

Water parameters are fine - I promise I wouldn't be wasting people's time if the problem were as simple to identify as that.

It would be really great if anyone could suggest a cause based on the symptoms I've described - they seem pretty distinctive to me.
 
I have the same problem right now with a dwarf gaurami... I was told it was a bacteria infection.. I have not figured it out myself I've been trying anti bacterial and fungal treatment.. day 3 I'll let you know if it helps.
 
When in doubt, use maracyn and maracyn 2 powdered medication, good for both bacterial and fungal infections.

This is the best photo I can get.
The tail is looking ragged now too - this is new.
You can see the swelling as that lighter area with dark margins along the bottom of the spinal column.

Robert, I'd be very interested to hear how you go.
Can I ask who told you it was a bacterial infection?
I'd be pretty reluctant to medicate until I knew what the problem was.

Yeah, looks like a bacterial infection and some finrot. Maracyn 1 in conjunction with Maracyn 2 I'd say, would work well with this problem you are having. How often do you water change, by the way? like every week? 2 weeks? 3? 4? Just wondering
