yes. people just use chop sticks or wire hangers when doing water changes once a month to mix it up.

What I plan to do (I recently set up a nursery tank with sand) is siphon out the sand into a bucket, rinse it out, and put back in the tank... I think with a bio wheel I shouldn't mess up my cycle.
