I don't think you'll have any problem running HOBs with sand--I've been doing it with all but one (planted--flourite substrate) of my tanks (although 2 cannisters on 125). Just make sure that you turn off the filters during a water change to prevent washing any sand up the filter intake tube. I think you'll really enjoy the sand . ... .
As far as sand . . . . I've got the Tahitian Moon sand in the 55g, and regular play sand in the other 8. It takes a bit of work to rinse it but it's worth it to me . . .. it ends up a light light tannish color . .. average grain. Alot of folks like the pool filter sand, it's a bit coarser; it's a matter of preference and cost.
