i put my swordtail thats ready to have babies in a fishbowl so all the fry wont get eaten by the other fish i know the mother will eat them to but i hope i will be able to save them i used the water from the tank to fill the fishbowl and plan to chance half the bowl water each day and put the mother back in the main tank after she has the babies do you think this will be all right for the short term thanks for any help you can offer

It would be better to setup a 5 or 10 gallon tank with no gravel in it for them (could be an actual aquarium or could even be a clear stearlite or rubbermaid tub from wal-mart). You really need a filter and heater in there for the babies. Just a cheap sponge filter is usually best with fry, don't have to worry so much about them getting sucked up or stuck in it and they can eat infusoria from it once it's established. You should still move the sponge filter around each day to make sure none of them are trapped under it.

Daily water changes are almost a requirement for fry, 50% is good. You'll also want to rig up a gravel vac small enough to suck junk off the bottom of tank without sucking out all the babies. I use a piece of hard clear plastic tubing with a long piece of flexible clear plastic tubing stuck onto it for siphoning my fry tanks. The smaller the tubing the better, especially when they are very small.
