Swordtails.

Swordtails

I'd say shrimp is a no go, they are just too small for a large sword to resist. I keep mine with Least Killies and the only problem is they eat the Least Killie fry. I also keep some with Endlers and they do the same thing. Other than that they are good community fish. Due to their bright colors and odd shaking mating ritual for females-you gotta see it--I would avoid fin nippers like skirted tetras or serpae tetras. In a 55gal you could easily go with two trios or an all males selection of different colors.

In my tank, the males displayed towards each other to attract a female, but your biggest concern should be not having enough females. The males will harass the females to breed and if there arent enough females to spread it out they can stress to death, especially if they are close to or have recently given birth.

I've heard that really old females can develop the sword. Is it possible he is really a she? Or is he too young? xD

No he's male for sure, water param's are good had mollies and guppies breeding in there before i put the swords in. Not worried about it though I wasn't expecting any fry to survive anyway between angels and rams. He just doesn't seem interested in the 2 females he hangs out with the flame tetras.
