Hi.
Was looking for some unpside down catfish for some time now, local aqua shop got some in, they called them syno cats, they look different than the last upside down cat i had a few years ago. The synos in the shop are dark brown with black spots. What do u reckon they are. What size do they grow too????
Any info appreciated thanks.. :thm:
Regards,
Denis

My favorite fish, the upside-down catfish, is known by the latin name synodontis nigriventris. It is possible that they have the false upside-down catfish, which grows twice as large as the 3 inch true upside-down cat. However, if they are listed by their latin name as stated above, they should be the true upsidedown cat. I've kept both, and they are both remarkably peaceful and love hiding places. Personally, I like the true ones better. I've seen these fish colored differently, as all fish are different. If you could get a picture of them, I could identify which one it is.
I've been keeping this fish for the past 11 years, and the three I started with are still alive. (11 years and counting, w00t!)

false upside down cats.

Yes, thats what they are, false upside down cats, what size do you reckon they would grow too.
Thanks for your help.

Denis

hi

madblimper,
Just looked at a lot of syno cats on cat planet and it defo is syno, but which one i am not sure. I will try and get a snap.. It says some grow to 8-9 inches.

The false upside-down kittyfish get to be roughly 6" in length. The one I had was peaceful, mostly stayed in a cave all day. I kept him alone, but you can try to keep him in a group. He lived for four years.
What size is your tank? A lone one could be kept in something as small as a 30 gallon tall (12x12x24.) Nothing smaller than 30 gallons is recommended for either one, true or false upside-down cat.

Hi,
I got two of the little *****'s and have housed them in a community tank, the dimensions are 36 x 12 x 15 inches. There are 6 sailfin mollies and 4 cory's 2 julie and two bronze, a pleco plus 10 neons. The cats are about 1.5 inches in lenght at the moment. The tank is wellplanted and has some bog oak .
If they grow too big i will move them to a 48 inch tank, i went back to the shop and they TOLD me they were upside down cats, realones not fake ones.
I will know soon enough as i have researched and got pics of both types of cats, the problem is though that i have not seen them since i bought them..lol.. toomany hiding places in the tank.
Regards,
Denis.

p.s. thanks again for the advice.
