I have never had a fish spawn other then guppies and sparkling gouramis so I don't really know what a catfish looks like before it spawns. I am pretty sure I have 1 female and 2 males because the males have always been slender and the one has always been a little thicker then the others. The past few days I noticed she is a lot thicker then normal. Like really fat, is she holding eggs or sick? She is swimming all over the tank, going into the spray bar swimming even near the top of the tank and out in the open. The two males seem to be following her anytime they see her. I am hoping she is carrying eggs and they are trying to spawn with her but don't know for sure.

This first one is all 3 of them for comparison, she is the one on the far left with the 2 males following her, the other 2 are are just her so you can see her swollen stomach.

not sure about bloating vs. eggs like above^

I would go with eggs.........usually when catfish like that get bloated, there are a bit less active at least IME........i think she might be preggo.......if u r okay with it......idk if others would think this is a good idea.......maybe net her or hand catch her(hand catching is much sfaer for catfish IME and all other fish besides super aggressive ones)........and hold her and get a closer look

usually u can easily tell diff. between preg. and bloatedness as the curves are diff. and i think u cna just tell

btw, nice pics and nice camera!:)

Yes she is.

yup, but they stil look pretty young.

You will need to provide some sort of cave with marbles on the bottom if you want to try and raise fry. I use glass marbles in a terra cotta dish, with a flower pot over it with a door cut out.

Here is a video of another setup which looks as though ti would be nice to see when the eggs are there:

They will eat their eggs, but usually leave their young alone.

I have 4 petricola's and one is definately a female. Looks just like
yours. I also read that if you have Geo's they lay their eggs along
with theirs. Thanks Rachel, going to try that and watch that video
when I get home tonight. Good luck Brad:)

I saw a movie on african rift lake Cichlids and the part they showed the synos were they laid there eggs in another Cichlids eggs. So when the Cichlid parent scooped them up they took in the syno eggs too. The synos ended up eating all the other fry and being the only ones left. Eventually they get spikey and the mother has to spit them out. Then they go on there marry way. Kind of sad but really interesting at the same time.

Yup, that's it! I have 4 Geo.Steindachneri, looks like I might have a pair. I'm going to do the
flowerpot/marble cave and see if that will do it. And Brad your tank looks super!
