If synos have a swim bladder (and I'm pretty sure they do), an infection of that organ could explain the wobbly, whirling, drunk-like swimming. I've never actually seen mine free swimming in the traditional sense - more like scampering over a surface.
I'd keep an eye on him, and if it continues you may want to try treating with a medication like erythromycin.
