WEEDY SEADRAGON
Phyllopteryx taeniolatus

Has anyone ever heard of this creature before? It looks so delicate, yet it gets to be over a foot in size. I am always amazed by sea creatures. There are so many things that are so different that live there.

I just thought I would share this with you guys. You will have to click on the link, then click on the Weedy seadragon in the list of fish. Also check out the Leafy seadragon.

What do you think?

Seadragons are in the same familiy as sea horses and pipe fish, they blend in with large Algae growths really well, and do get rather large.

Hi

I actually have seen them many times in the National Aquarium in Baltimore (NAIB) and at the NAIB nursery which is located right where I work. The head of the nursery is a friend of mine ;) and I may (big MAYBE) have a project going on with the Leafy Sea Dragon in the future!!!

The guy that heads the nursery is interested in obtaining more information about how they breed and I have developed some computer software which may be used for this...

The other day one of the dragons in the NAIB nursery died and we had to dissect it. Actually I did not help but I looked while they where doing it. :D San note, however. They are really pretty and my friend was not happy at all... :(

It does look like a very delicate animal... I am not sure if they ever found what killed that one. They cost thousands of dollars...

My lab might help to bring this animals into spawning in the future... depending on if they ever give us money for it...

...and even if they do, they are so delicate we might never succeed

Just thought that this might be interesting to you guys....

I have a couple pictures of the leafy seadragons at the hawaii aquarium. Ill look around to find the pics, then post them up.

Hi,

I think they have pictures at NAIB's website..

The exhibit is moving to Italy or Portugal... They are training someone from their, this semester...

Well, if I get the videos of the fish spawning, I will still need permision from my boss and his boss to publish it in the internet.

But if anything like that is possible I will try to publish it here first ;)

Leafy Seadragons in Dallas

I know that a lot of folks got photos of them during the AGA in Dallas this weekend, during the trip to Dallas World Aquarium.

Keep asking, someone ought to be able to post photos.

Check this out. The aquarium in Gatlinburg, Tenn. had several of them. Here is one of the pics I took of them if any of you are interested. I have a couple more I may post later.
