Taking Betta on a Plane?

You would be better off mailing it overnight on the day you left. That way you would be there when it arrived. If you pack it well and ship it express it will be fine. That way you won't have to deal with the hastle of the airlines.

I'd feel safer (and know it was my own fault if he died) if I took him with. >>; Overprotective I suppose.

uh we talking about a single betta here. get one of them special breathable fish bags, fill it with 80% water, dump the beta in, seal it(not too tight, pressure on the plane will expand the bag further), put it in styrofoam box, fill the rest of the box with newspapers, put the styrofoam box in another cardboard box, seal everything. Put the box in your carry on. Done

only thing i am not sure about is how much damage(if any) the security scanners will do to live fish.

I would be more concerned with your mother in law try to throw the betta in her pond as koi food. You bringing a special prized betta over can be viewed as a challenge to her personally as if your fish is better than her kois.
