Talking to my girlfriend, read this, broke out into tears

I honestly don't won't to look at the article, totally in a bad and depressed mood and have little faith in humanity currently from other news. Sometimes it just helps seeing people that are good and care.
On Sunday I'm attending my first volunteer orientation at my local humane society, pretty excited about getting to work with the animals and get some experience to boot.

From everyone's comments I know this must be a heartbreaking story, but I can't bring myself to even read it.
I've seen so much of man's inhumanity; I've seen so many things I wish I could forget.
I couldn't live if knew every horrible things that heartless humans do to animals, and, most desplicably, to children.
I don't understand cruelty; I can't imagine how any human can have a heart so cold and without feeling that the suffering of sweet, innocent creatures and children means nothing to them.
