for future plants, you might consider taking off the plant weights and spongy stuff and just let them float horizontally at the water surface. i usually do that with all my new plants for at least a few days until i decide where they're getting shoved into the gravel, lol. in my case, the floating plants shoot out little roots during their float time and it seems to help with them 'grabbing hold' of the substrate faster when i do plant them.
