I finally go my tank set up that I got from a friend. All thats in there is gravel my Golden Midas and a Plecostomus. I was thinking about just getting some river rock and drift wood but thought I'd ask and see what everyone would suggest for this 55 gallon tank. THANKS!

Hi there. is the tank cycled? If not, check out the Sticky at the top of this forum. Secondly, the pleco will like some hiding places, so set up some caves of some kind. Some plants would also be nice. Silk seem to look better than plastic, if you're not going with real plants. Drift wood is great and often really sets off a tank. I also use large rocks in my aquarium. I love them. HTH and good luck.

Howdy! Yes it is cycled. The gravel is cultured and the water is the same water that was in the tank when my friend had it. Thanks for the suggestions plants would be a great idea. However he likes to rearange the gravel so would it even be worth putting them in there if they will end up all messed up? I plan on getting the drift wood and rocks from the river. Anything I need to do to them before I introduce them into my tank? Thanks again!

WSell, let's see. I've had plants with Plecos before and had no problems, others have come back and said their pleco tore up everything so, depends on the fish. I still think Silk plants would be okay, just place them well in the gravel, or have them on the edges of rocks and driftwood.

As for treating things you pull out of a river, some folks will say it's dangerous no matter what. I say bleach, boiling and baking will kill anything. It's your call. Most folks, when they find aquarium material out in nature will soak it in bleach and water for a while. I'd go 24 hours, or at least over night. Then, I'd bring it inside, rinse it in some dechlorinator and water to remove the chlorine bleach. After that, I'd boil the stuff for 30 minutes to an hour. If it's big, you can try boiling half at a time. If it's still too big, pop the thing in a 375 degree oven for an hour or so. After that, let it cool., give it a rinse and put it in your tank. Voila. HTH.

Awsome! Thanks for the help. I'm going to head out and see what I can find. I'll post pics once I get it all set up. Thanks again for your help!

LOL I didn't catch it at first but its my Midas that likes to rearange the tank not the Pleco.

In my experience the more porous the rock the more you need to be careful. Sandstone and Lava rock come to mind. The rocks I get from a local river are very dense and therefore not very porous. I soak them in a bucket for a few days, changing out the water every day. Then I'll hit them with a brush, give them a final rinse and then I'm done.
