tank in bedroom too noisy?

My apt is small and I can hear both of mine from my bed, it's kid of nice....Not really noisey unless the water has evaporated off the top a bit...Even then I don't mind much.

I have a 30g with a penguin bio wheel in my room. It doesn't bother me. Just make sure you fill it all they way after water changes or you will hear the water running.

i must have gotten a bad ac 50 because mine still makes a hum i think i might send it in and get a replacement idk but it makes it hard to sleep

My Penguin 200 is quiet, although has a very mild hum from the motor.
the hum is sort of relaxing and cant be heard outside of my daughters bedroom at night. during the day you never hear it.

make sure your water level is correct and you wont hear water splashing either.

One of the reasons we got fish was BECAUSE of the filter noise! The "white noise" distracts form noisy bad neighbors.

hmmmm.....I would recommend running a sponge filter along with a powerhead. Since everything is submersed, there is no noise at all......and....since it is a sponge filter, fry dont get sucked up.

My Fluval 205 is really quiet, can't hear it running at all. They may make a smaller model for a 10-20 gallon. I would recommend not getting an air pump (for air stone) though, that seems to be what's making the most noise on my tank.

The filter in the form of a canister filter should be as close to silent as you could ever want. I know the Rena series is and I would expect the same from the Fluval or the Eheim series. As nynikki pointed out, it is the air pump and the air stones that make the real sound. I find the sound of moving water soothing but it could make it harder to sleep at night. The spray bars of the canister filters can be positioned below the water so they don't make any water sounds at all. They oxygenate the water by keeping it moving near the surface where the gas exchange takes place. You were talking about putting the aquarium on top of your dresser but have you checked it to make sure it can hold the tank? If you wouldn't want an adult to sit on it, its probably not strong enough to hold a 20.
