Fish do need to sleep, so it isn't a bad idea to have the light off during the night.

Since my tanks aren't planted I really only leave the light on when I'm at home to enjoy the fish - which translates to leaving it on between about 4PM and 9PM on work days and longer on off days.

i have my tank light on while i am home and awake. which is usually between 4pm and 10pm. that's also because i'm fighting some algae, so i''m limiting my light right now.

timers for me...
dawn: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
midday: 11:30 am - 9:30 pm
dusk: 9:30 pm - 10:30 pm
then i have the moonlights... woohoo!
im actually thinking about shortening the photoperiod on my tanks by about an hour or so. at least in my reef b/c im battling some hair algae right now. but other than that its workin out great.

Some fish sleep in the day, and hunt in the night ...
