Hello,

First I would like to say that this forum is great and has already helped me greatly in the last few days i've been surfing around here.

Right now I have 3 tanks 2 10 gallons and 1 29 gallon.

I want to purchase a larger tank, 55 gallon or larger but I have no room for it in my apt.

The only place I have room for such a large tank is in my garge. It a large 2 car gargae so there is plenty of room the only problem is that the garage is uninsulated and I live in Southern Indiana so its very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter.

I'm not to concerned with the tempature in the summer months but the winter months concern me. I know it would take a larger heater or two I was thinking 2 300w heaters to keep everything kosher in the winter. My questions are how much energy will the heaters consume? I dont want a crazy electric bill in the winter from the heaters constatly running.

The more I think about this idea the more I dont want to do it but I want a larger tank so bad.

any suggestions for my gargae tank idea or can it even be done?

Thank you for your time

Chad

If you are going to do it I would reccomend for you to get an acrylic 55g...possibly have it custom built double thick like 1/2 inch because acrylic insulates WAY better than glass....also instead of 2 "water" heaters, I would do mabe a 150w water heater and then a 150 w substrate heater...because it will heat the rocks also and that will help retain heat....FWIW. I think its doable.....but if it gets hot enough in your garage you may also need to cool the tank.....thats when it becomes $$$.

You can keep it warm, but I am concerned about how hot it will be in the summer too. Plus, the tank may be warm, but what about you? How are you going to enjoy the in January? What about doing your water changes during that time of year? IMO, you should pass on that one and start rearranging furniture! Like, do you need a kitchen table? :)

I lived on the shores of Lake Erie for 40 years. It gets very very cold there. Its my opinon that even 2 - 300 wt heaters are not going to be enough to keep the water warm enough for fish other than cold water species. And I agree with the others. Mkae room some how or something.
