Well, I am starting over with this tank. I siphoned out all of the water to get rid of the ammonia and started over with new water and live sand. I am hoping this will cycle the tank properly with the addition of some hearty fish next week. I am becoming very skeptical of some of the recommendations about placing a shrimp in the tank without any other source of bactieria. Has anyone actually had this work? It sounds like everybody uses the shrimp plus either live rock or live sand. I have also talked to a few of my LFS and they couldn't believe I put a shrimp in my tank.
I helped setup a friend’s tank. She didn’t want live rock but synthetic coral. All I told her to do was feed her invisible fish. They were very hungry. This worked so I think shrimp will also.
She also used a bag of the sand with bacteria. I forget what it's called but this probably helped.
