My 29 gallon tank sits on a stocky antique bureau. In between the tank and the wood is a towel (bottom layer) to keep moisture wicked off the surface, and over that a plastic sheet, to form a moisture barrier. The sheets overlap the tank footprint by about an inch on all sides so that water from minor spills during WC's doesn't easily seep around.
I got paranoid reading this and just checked the surface. No sign of moisture or water damage.
