hi is there any film or cover that you can put over a tank to stop the light getting in and forming algae. I did think about that film that is mirrored one side as that stops strong light, but then realised the mirrored side would have to be on the out side so that would be no good any other ideas.

if the tank doesn't have any light, how will you see the fish?

to prevent/reduce algae do not overfeed your fish, clean your gravel, and do weekly water changes.

if your tank is planted, i wouldn't try any light reducing ideas.

if you have a bad algae problem, its probably because theres too much organic waste in the water that the algae is growing on or the lights are on too much or too little.

don't overfeed your fish, manually clean the algae of the glass/substrate, keep the lights on no more or less than 10-12 hours a day, keep up with your weekly water changes to attain perfect water quality, and algae should not be that big of a problem.

i didn't mean something to totally cut tht light out just something to reduce it. the tank light is on for about 6 hours and i have no plants never been able to keep them and i don't like them anyway. Ah well worth a try. thanks

try a lower watt bulb

try putting a piece of foam board insulation on the back behind your background if it is getting real sunlight from the back.

feed less, clean more or reduce fish load

add algae eaters or bristle nosed pleco

Along with the other suggestions, there’s opaque ceiling panels for fluorescent light fixtures. Trouble is you have to buy a whole sheet (2x4 feet or something like that) for a little piece. They are nice and thin and would fit between your bulb and the glass protection of your tank – but they are brittle and cutting them neatly is a bit of a challenge. Score them first and then cut with heavy-duty kitchen shears.

Thanks for you help, it is a lower watt bulb and the there is a sheild between light and water, it's built into tank. the main source of the problem is natural light, i have the tank in the least possible direct sunlight and in the room with only the very early morning sun, but still no help. Will try cutting down food and more water changes, thanks

plecos need more food than just algae, and generally the waste they produce is more work to clean up after than just cleaning the algae in the first place. ottos are a better choice to eat algea, but there needs to be a good amount there for them to live on first.

Would ottos be suitable if i supplied algae tablets there is quite a bit of algae but obviuosly it is a small tank so therefore supply would be limited, thanks

Well...if yuo want shade plants, get some duck weed. builds a natural cover. it propigates fast and you can always sell it
