Tank Re-sealing 101

Originally it was suppose to be a simple bottom glass repair affecting no panels but becasue the original bottom was floated between the 4 panels, it was almost impossible to remove without removing 1 end panel to relieve the pressure of the 4 panels clamping the bottom glass. Then it was discovered that becasue the bottom was floated, very little consideration was given to the flushness of the 4 panels which were all uneven on the bottom and could not receive the new bottom panel as cap until they were made perfectly level. So both ends (one at a time) had to be removed, cleaned and resealed using the old bottom glass sideways as a level to insure both sides and end were flush to the bottom. When the new bottom was lowered into place on top of the 4 vertical panels it sat almost perfectly flush within 1/32 which was acceptable IMHO. So for all practical purposes my 225 project is a rebuild.

Yes, much more critical..
I have a 55 with a similar issue, but it has a full frame..

you are definately making it stronger by capping the bottom rather than floating it as it was originally. Kind of suprising that the made such a large tank it that way.

do you have a thread for that tank rebuild?

Sure does, been a very interesting thread.

This one too, I almost wish now that I hadn't sold that 55 I had for so cheap.. all cuz I was scared to reseal it! Dang you guys make this look easy! haha

Just the help I needed.....

At the hardware store they sell tools for doing pretty much the samething to your bathtub. There is a corner finishing peice that runs about $3 vs. $20 for that thing they advertise on TV that has different finishing edges on each corner.

Nice thread, Zig...

Do you think a 10oz will be enough for a 75 gallon tank? I only bought one and I'm thinking i should of bought two....

I would definantely get another.

If you run out while you are sealing it, you are in trouble.
Wet silicone wont stick to dry silicone, so you need to finish the job once you start it!
