Hi everyone. Ive owned plenty of fresh water tanks.. and still do own 1. Love em! my question is.. how hard/difficult is it to care for an eel? ive always wanted one, but ive never owned anything salt water. i was thinking along the lines a snowflake eel. and also.. what equipment is needed? i was reading an article and it talked about many different things for a regular marine aquarium.. but what do i need for just an eel?

:welcome: To AC :)

Eels in general are the most hardy marine animal anyone could keep. But their are certain side affects to which most never think of for in your water quality you will need to maintain a proper Ph level, never dropping a great deal. For listen to this.

I contacted a new LFS owner and they had issues with why their Zebra moray wouldn't feed, and they were smart to keep records of their tank conditions for which each and every time the eel wouldn't feed, they seen that so what I was telling them was true to the letter.

In short, you need to maintain at all times, your Ph levels, and with eels such as this, not lower then 8.3. And when it be that your a huge drop as they told me they did drop to 8.0 or 8.1, their eel wouldn't feed. The other is, you need to maintain a low level in your tanks nitrate levels. But at untraceable levels would be most desired. And the worst possible thing to think of is waste build ups in your tank.

The problem within waste build ups is that your nothing to test for this, other then what others know of your tanks equipment like the skimmer for one. Water changes in this is a huge must.

Before I could go any further, I need to know the size of your tank.

i was going to wait to see what i needed.. and buy the proper size tank. Cause i def wouldnt want to stress out the eel

You should get nothing smaller then a 75 gal tank and if you can go a bit larger, a 90. Have it drilled for a sump and request that the overflow box be built in nearly to the height of the glass cover,so that way there be no escaping through this way. With this, buy the best skimmer you could buy, you go cheap in this, you wish later that you bought something better. Don't buy cheap now, and say I will upgrade later, this never happen for many and besides buying cheap and buy better later, your throwing money away.

Sure, this will come up real soon, others will tell you that you can keep a sfe in a 55 gal tank, its not ideal for this species, and you will as well want to have other fish, if not another eel, so go larger.
