Tank Shuffling advice

The only problem with adding shrimp to the 5g is that they may become snacks for the betta, but hey they're cheap and probably good for they digestive system ;) . You might try a brig snail or 2. They come in tons of pretty colors. Some bettas get along with snails, some dont. I have found that most of my bettas have done well with other fish, but not guppies. Betta's tend to attack them bc of the flowing fins.

sorry, I never knew what IMO meant until now.

You can try the shrimp and snails, it really depends on your betas personality whether he will make a snack out of them or ignore them. Try ghost shrimp, they are usually available at more LFS and are very cheep. If those go well you could add more exotic shrimp later.

try one bamboo shrimp. they're too big for a betta to even consider eating, and they have very interesting habits.

5g - should be fine addding shrimp or snail, ghost shrimps may become snacks for the betta. Might want to try a bamboo shrimp since they're a little larger.

10g - a small school of neons, glo-lights, cardinals, or rummynoses would be good for a schooling fish. I prefer rummynoses since they tend to be more active and school better. I also like panda cories for bottom dwellers. 6 rummynoses and 4-6 pandas would be ideal.

35g - Another 4-6 tiger barbs should be fine.

75g - 1. Sand isn't too difficult to maintain. You have to cover up the intake to your filter with a pre-filter sponge or mesh, to prevent sand particles from damaging your impeller. You don't want to have too deep a sandbed unless you have rooting plants, anything deeper than 2 inches can be dangerous because sand can form anaerobic bacteria pockets in areas where it becomes compact. Anaerobic bacteria release methane gas, which is toxic. Stirring up the sand occasionally will also prevent this.

2. Think you want 2-3 females per male. Don't get more than 3 males since they're territorial against other males.

3. Larger schoolers like congo tetras, blackskirt tetras and rainbowfishes. For non-schoolers, angelfishes should be compatible.

Easy to care for plants in a low light setup are:

anacharis
java fern & moss
crypt wendtii
anubias (any)
hornwort

Easy plants that will survive in low light but do better with more light are:

water sprite
water wisteria
temple plant (hygrophila polysperma)
amazon sword
dwarf sag
vallisneria

Thanks for all the input! I think I will look at getting a shrimp - probably bamboo if I can find one locally for the 5G. I like rummy nose tetras from what I hae seen for the 10 G, still looking at bottom dwellers for it.

My 35 I will up my tiger barb school to 15 maybe using albinos for the last 6 just to shake things up :)

for the 75, I had heard about the potential issue with sand and the gasses building up, but I will have rooted plants and two peacock eels who will spend the day burrowing, so that shouldn't be too much of an issue if I go with sand.

Thanks for all the input - boy this is fun trying to plan all these aquariums :)

I have one more ? for my 75 regarding the fish I can put in there. I have been looking at my gouramis and they are all aparently male, so I currently have 3 male opaline (3 spot) gouramis who are living in a 35 G and are actually getting along failry well. I am goign to move these guys to a 75, and I was going to add 6 females to have a 2-1 F-M ratio. Could I still add some boesemani rainbows int eh tank as well and if so, how many? other fish that will be in the 75 are 2 peacock eels, 1 spotted pleco, 1 albino shark.

Cool, I am really liking the way the boesemani look and was hoping to be able to add some. So it looks like my tanks will wind up being like this:

5G - planted
1 male betta
1 bamboo shrimp or something at least large enough my betta won't eat it and small enough it won't eat the betta.

10G - planted
6-8 rummy nosed tetras
1 small bottom feeder (still looking, cories and loaches all require more than 10G and I won't put any pleco in a 10G)
maybe 3-4 ghost shrimp in place of a bottom feeder? would that be a problem with tetras?

35 G - add more plants
15 tiger barbs
1 smaller pleco (zebra, gold nugget maybe)
1 peacock eel

75 G - moderately planted/ sand substrate w/natural rock and driftwood
9 Gouramis (3 males, 6 females)
8-10 boesemani rainbows
3 pictus cats
1 spotted pleco
1 albino rainbow shark
2 peacock eels

do those stocking levels look about right in each tank?
