Im planning on building an acrylic tank, but Im not sure what size it should be. What kind of rule is there between length vs. width that I can expand to upon building a successful tank without creating a dissaster.

I was thinking of 50" L, 16" W, 50" H. Can this be done? If not, what would be the next best thing. Thanks

There is no rule on what shape the fish tank should be, if you want a square one or if you want triangle one , is dosn't matter to the fish(unless the particular fish that you are keeping has certain requirments). The only other requirement is that it is big enough for the fish to live happly for the lenght of their lives.
Your tank dimensions seem fine to me just make sure the acrylic is thick enough. There is a site that can calculate the thickness for you, I just dont know what it is. Btw I would say there is no limit to what size tank you could build with acrylic. :)

Won't a tank of 50" H be hard to clean/decorate?

Not impossible, my Tank's depth from the side of the tank to the gravel is 48 inches. Dose take some time I must say. :)

I was looking over at www.garf.org and apperantly an acrylic tank cant be higher than 30", so I´ll settle for that ;) .

Its not that I want a really tall aquarium, its just that I was thinking of getting some angelfish and I was told that the higher the tank, the better.

I am sorry to say that that site is not correct(If a professional is building the tank anything is possible). Like I said before if the acrylic is thick enough you will be fine.

Good, well then I´ll make it 50" :D

The cleaning part got me thinking though... How do you vaccum gravel 48" or so from the top? Do you just get a longer tiflon? Anyway, I already decided where I´m going to put it and I cant make it longer nor wider, perhaps taller... (maybe not).
