2x4's except on the front, those will probably be 2x6's. plywood on the top, bottom, and as a shelf in the middle, and to help stablilize it. i will use angle brackets to strengthen the joints. whole thing will be skinned in masonite with doors on the front and decorative molding.
 
Thats pretty much the way I'm am planning to build my stand!!

What size tank is this for? If the tank is only 3 ft long you really dont need that diag support or angle brackets if you plan on drilling and screwing it together. I like the 2x6 idea in the front though. Those shelves are a pain to fit in too, I could only add one because of my canister.
 
You won't need the diagonal or the shelf to stabilize it after skinning it with masonite and using angle brackets. Putting a shelf under the aquarium would be pain in case you decided to use a canister filter. And 2x4 on each corner should be able to hold the whole thing together just fine.
 
I'm not that great with wood... Give me sheet metal and thats another story. I bet its way cheaper to build your own stand.
 
its a 45g 36x12 inch footprint.

i may not need the diaginal support. its mostly to keep the stand from twisting or bending side to side, but i'm going to put plywood on the top and bottom and as a shelf in the middle and screw it into all the sides, so that will help with diaginal bend. i'm not putting a shelf on the bottom, i'm actually putting a piece of plywood on the bottom of the stand that will extend about 4" farther all the way around to add stability.

also i may end up just covering the whole back with plywood, since if i buy a 4x8 foot sheet, i will have a good chunk leftover after the top, shelf, bottom, and doors. if i attach a piece of plywood to the back, that will also help a lot with any twisting.
