I'm not contstruction minded at all ! :y220d:

I was given a wrought iron stand thats 26.5" x 13" on the top (without a center support). The tank that I would like to put on it is 20" X 10" X 18.75H. So basically the perimeter of the tank won't fit on the perimeter of the stand.

If I put a plywood top on it...will that work? Since the plywood would be supporting the full weight of the tank is plywood strong enough to support the tank without a center support on the stand? Would I need like 3/4" plywood?

3/4" or even 1/2" plywood should work. If you go to Home Depot they should be able to cut to size.

1/2" plywood would be fine. Just make sure it's plywood and not one of those shelf particle board.

definitely use plywood and not OSB or any version of particleboard / MDF

paint it black (or whatever color the stand is) and no one will notice it

if the stand has a raised lip of some sort above the edge of the stand's designed tank, you don't need a snug fit of the plywood into the "receptacle" area on top of the stand. however, keep it reasonably close to all edges to give you the broadest and best-centered support base.

if the stand does NOT have an edge around the perimeter, screw short pieces of 1x1 to the underside of the plywood to make a reasonably snug fit between the underside of the plywood and the hole in the stand; this will keep the plywood base from walking off the stand
