tank too small for the fish

Primetime, the catfishes are defenently not otto's. they are abouut 2.5 inches long and I know otto's deffenitly don't get that big.

Roan art: I'me pretty sure it is M. nigrans. I identified it in my 19th edition innes fishbook (40 years old, not the best source of info) then google imaged the latin name and the pics look close to what I have. however I will look around a bit to see if it's something else.

Sheddidilly: Clown plecos? No idea what they look like. mine are kind of fat without much finnage, the more I think about it the more I think there commons origanaly I almost knew they weren't commons but I think they may have just had thier fins clamped because of the stress of living through the nitrogen cycle.(cycle doesn't work, don't believe them!!)

All: I know a lot about fish and my dad goes so far as to call me a walking dictionary( mostly because i can tell him about any fish he asks about) however rainbows, catfishes and cichlids just happen to be my weak spots. I did not choose the fish in this tank, nor did I set it up other wise all the fish in the tank would have been fine and without any questions( OK maybe about having too much fish, Iv'e messed up there before and don'twan't that to happen again, I think I lost almost 20 fish). Somebody has made a mistake and it is best for the fish that I help. Im'e probably going to take the fish, once I get some bigger tanks. How big a tank the fish need, is a question for another thread, and another time, right now I just want to identify the fish and find out how big they are. I know wich fish can go into the tank and can wright a list without looking at a book or internet if I had to.
 
The rainbow fish: defenitly not m.nigrans. I redid the google search and noticed that the pic. of "M.nigrans " had a question mark next to it an when I looked at the web page It was in a language I don't understand. I then checked the pic of M. australis on age of aquariums and with a closer examination of colouration I now know what fish I have here. mine is quite paler and has only the orange colouration on a silver backgound. Did you go to the site I linked at all? The color of m. australis will depend on which locality it came from.

The Rainbowfish Home site is "THE" rainbowfish site and has pictures of different species from different localities. I'd go with what they say over Age of Aquariums any day -- no offense to Age of Aquariums or anyone who visits there.

Regardless, if it's m. australis in whatever form then it's going to get to ~6".

Roan Art: I just checked all the pics on the link you gave me and it's not the splendida form however it is some form of M. australis . in general the coloration and finnage match the most out of all the rainbow . for now the fish will stay in the tank, and i will add 2 more just to keep the one happy until I get the bigger tank for them, the plecos and some of my fish. I'me thinking of building something about 200g - 300g so I can keep the plecos. judging by how many people I know who seem to not care about the fish or not know, If I were to give the plecos to the pet store, they would probably be stunted in someone elses tank. You can even tell some people that a fish is too big for a tank and they'll look at you like your stupid.

Nod nod. You're a good person to rescue these fish and if you do get a tank that big, they will be in heaven :)

Yeah the fish would be in heaven, As long as the plecos get along with each other when there older. I might be getting a 55 next week and think the big tank will be a summer project built following instructions for the plywood/w acrylic tank from garf and altering the plans to use a thin coat of concrete to replace the epoxy.( epoxy is a very toxic paint while it's drying ). getting the lights and heaters however is gonna take a while, especially on my budget (what I can get from my parents and a paper route if I can find one close enough). I don't think the tank itself will be to expensive( few sheets of plywood, sheet of acrylic and a few bags of concrete). Tommorow I will go to the tank to do the maintnence and will most likely have a definite answer on what the catfish are.
 
About how I said I would find out what the catfish are today, not gonna happen. I haven't been feeling the best lately and don't wan't to pass what ever I have on to the elderly. My grandma works there so I'll have her tell the person who pays for the tank (and set it up, and asked my grandma to get me to help out with the tank) that she'll have to do the maintnence herself. I should be able to get a sure identifacation on the catfish as I have'nt really looked at them that much before (I like the rainbow more) as soon as I can get back to the tank.
