I agree that it depends on the decor. I spray painted my cheesy oak trim satin black and built my stand out of maple. I then used a black formica top and picked up some more black on the inner shelves and door handles. I like the contrast.
Metal however, can be fabricated, finished to suit most any decor. It all depends.
