so I took the plunge of changing my substrate after 8 years of having Flourite. I loved my results with it I just felt the sand was going to be better for the discus and the fish I am going to add. (sterbai, tetras, rcs and assassin snails)
I decided I would switch to pool filter sand to lighten up my Discus. I left the background dark to show off the plants and the sand seems to have helped make the colors of the fish pop. So far I like how it looks, just need to see how the plants fill in. Here are some pics, before and after.

I think you made the right choice the flourite didn't complement the fish. I've heard discus delight in picking through sand too.

It'll be great to see the plants filled in again be sure to give us update picks!
