Ok, I realize this isn't a physical piece of equipment that I'm building but this is my style of DIY project (I have too many burns, scars, and stitches from DIY projects)
I want to build a web app that lets you record readings from your tank (like ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, temp. etc...) as well as notes. The first version will be just this, but then I want to upgrade it to allow you to have multiple tanks, and to configure your tank so you can list the inhabitants, plants, equipment etc too, as well as pictures and videos.

I'd like to also make it so that each user has an RSS feed so they can put their tank stats on their web site, add some social networking features so that you can follow and see what is happening with other people's tanks. It would also have a function to copy vital stats (like ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph) to your clipboard to make it easy to post the info into discussion forums like this one, when you are asking for help.

It would also be as easy to access on a computer as on an iPhone or Android, so it will be easy to update and view from anywhere.

The status of this project right now: In the middle of a self-taught crash course ruby on rails training binge. I should have something to show in a couple of weeks. It will start out free. I'd like to keep it mainly free, but might offer paid upgrades to get more storage space or things like that.

Your thoughts? Would you use such a thing, what features would you like it to have? Is there anything like this out there already?

There is a program out there already that was geared toward saltwater. I used if for about a day and then decided it was too much work.

lmao. dream shot down

I dont recall the name of the program. It was more than a couple years ago and I didn't use it long enough for it to be memorable. Dont give up your dream based on one persons opinion. A good web based program might be nice. What would be useful in a program is to beable to enter all your tank info, you water perameters, and hae it tell you what to do to fix any issues. Aso, reminders, schedules, etc.

So an update on my project... there's bin a bit of a learning curve learning Ruby on Rials, but I have a just about working beta version. I should be able to make it live within the next couple of weeks.
I wanted to get some input on tests you do on your aquarium. This will be totally customizable, but I want to provide new users with a wide range of tests to select from for their aquarium. I would appreciate any feedback - have I missed any tests?

Woohoo! Tankbuddy.com is now up and running!! Well, a basic version. So far you can create an account, add tanks and readings for each tank. If you are interested give it a try. It is totally free and I intend it to stay that way.
If you do try it out, please let me know what you think.
Now that it's up and running, I will start adding the really cool stuff!

Now if there was a tank type setting, where it would suggest optimal temperature, PH, etc etc. I could see this of being of great use for newbies, or anyone with experience trying something new.

If you could consolidate a 30 threads of information and knowledge, into a condensed "suggestion" or something similar I'd use it.

Thanks for checking it out. And yes, I do plan on doing what you suggested and much more. The way it is right now is just the base functionality but I'm working on it constantly.

It will eventually be able to suggest fish that will be compatible with your tank (using many parameters), or suggest changes to your tank to make your fish more comfortable. It will also alert you when your tank parameters approach the danger zone - for the specific fish in the tank.

I have lots of great ideas, and I really appreciate your feedback too.
